Tin Can Labeller

Capital Creations has partnered with a client to build a machine for labelling small tin cans. Specifically, the goal of the project is to take a process that is currently done by hand and replace it with a device that will provide the same quality of label application whilst reducing the time to label from thirty seconds to five seconds. To maintain label application quality, the label must be applied free from air bubbles, end-to-end misalignment, or other defects such as damaging the can or label.

In developing our project scope our team has explored various options to complete this task, from ultra-simple manually actuated devices to fully automated conveyor belt fed systems similar to those found in an industrial labelling facility. Ultimately, a device was developed that best fit the client’s budget and the batch size of 100-500 cans per week. Our electric motor-assisted device automates the label application process, whilst the operator is required to feed a can into the device, depress a switch, then remove the labelled can. This provides the opportunity to perform quality control on each labelled can whilst eliminating any repetitive stressful motions and meeting the project goals.
