Project Abstract

Base Mapping and Geomatic Services Branch (BMGS) maintains the Capital Regional District’s (CRD) Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS). The DGPS service provides users with the ability to survey and layout points, accurate to a few centimeters. The reliability of the correction data stream (RTK signal) is a key concern for this service to be beneficial. Currently there is no automated monitoring of the DGPS service.

BMGS can monitor the RTK signal of the DGPS manually. This method has proved to be inefficient. The Systems Personnel at BMGS and the CRD require a system where the monitoring is automated.

The Real Time Kinematics Monitoring system (RTK-MON) proposed by BMGS is to monitor the availability of the RTK signal transmitted by the DGPS system. The purpose of this project is to implement the RTK-MON system.

The main deliverable of the RTK-MON is going to be a real time monitoring system that will notify an administrator of the DGPS system if the correction data is not available.

The Capstone team will develop the RTK-MON system at Camosun College. BMGS and the CRD will provide the necessary equipment for implementing and testing of the RTK-MON system.
