Elevated Engineering
Mobile Wheelchair Lift
Our vision is to create a wheelchair lifting mechanism, capable of easy transportation, and compact storage. These attributes are important, in order to simulate the same freedom of reach a non-disabled person might experience in their home.
Because we are targeting the solution towards one individual client, the dimensions and shape of the device will be tailored to his home environment. For example, the lift must be able to fit in the client's elevator, and store within his garage workshop.
Georgia Gibbs
Although Georgia’s knowledge stems mostly from working in recreation and aquatics, her experience has helped build a strong background in team management and conflict resolution. She hopes to build her knowledge of the design process, through up-coming cooperative educational work terms. Aside from academics and aquatics, Georgia most enjoys summertime, sunshine, beaches, wildlife and baseball.
Aidan de Jong
After graduating high school, Aidan joined the Mechanical Engineering Technology at Camosun and is now in his 2nd year of the program. He consistently achieves a high level of academic performance and plans on further developing his studies through the Mechanical Engineering Bridge program to UBC. In his free time, Aidan is often found outdoors hiking, biking, and exploring the city of Victoria.
Jordan Darlington
Previously a Cabinet Maker in the Cowichan Valley, Jordan moved to Victoria three years ago to pursue an education in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Camosun College. He is always willing to help his fellow students and has consistently maintained A+ grades in the majority of his classes. When not busy with academics, he can be found working on his 1984 Mazda Rx-7, camping, snowboarding, or flying his RC airplane.
Dakota Laine
Since leaving the fire protection trade three years ago, Dakota has been pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering so that he may return to the fire protection industry as a designer. Dakota has maintained an excellent academic record throughout his three years in the Camosun engineering technology program and is looking forward to continuing his education in the UVIC mechanical engineering program. When Dakota is not working towards is academic goals, he is often writing music or working on his car.

Our project team’s client was an avid outdoor enthusiast and handyman, however in 2008 he severed his spinal column in a tragic fall, which subsequently also cost him his right leg. As a wheelchair user, the freedom with which he pursued his regular life was now limited to a workspace only 65” above the floor. We plan to increase his level of accessibility by providing an elevating device for his wheelchair, similar to an able-bodied portable step ladder
Our team is very excited to be working on a project that will have such a positive social impact. We hope that our device will one day Improve the lives of countless wheelchair users.
