For Loop Four
Introduction
The For Loop Four consists of Qi Guo, Sinclair Scott, and Matt Douglas, and we are excited to be working with Three Trees Technical to make the company’s BigFish product more reliable and easier to maintain. BigFish is a cloud-based enterprise resource planning system designed to handle the business needs of commercial printing companies. The application is already fully functional; however, it contains a large number of API endpoints that require maintenance over time. We were tasked with building a system that provides automated testing for these API endpoints as well as developer-level documentation generated from code comments. Our testing system must also integrate seamlessly with the existing deployment pipeline to prevent buggy code from reaching production. Overall, our system streamlines testing to ensure that the API remains bug free when changes are made, and that developers have up-to-date documentation to help them navigate the large codebase.
Acknowledgements
We would like to thank Ben Leather, our sponsor at Three Trees Technical, for allowing us to work on this project and gain real-world experience testing and documenting a large codebase. We would also like to thank Michael Liu for helping us to improve our project management skills, and Katie Tanigawa for her invaluable guidance on our technical communication assignments in preparation for the symposium.
Team Members
Qi Guo
Qi is the Documentation Lead for the team, focusing on structured API comments and documentation quality. He reviews endpoint comments to ensure that routes, parameters, response types, and status codes are accurate and consistent. His work helps the team connect API documentation with the reusable testing framework and reduce errors caused by unclear comments. Through this project, Qi is demonstrating attention to detail, technical communication, and practical API testing skills. He is interested in applying these skills in software testing, technical documentation, and IT support roles.
Sinclair Scott
Sinclair is the Testing Lead for the team. Sinclair’s focus is on the implementation of the testing framework and ensuring that the reusable tests can be used for expanded functionality of the system. When not working on school work Sinclair can be found working IT whether at his job of 8 years, or helping out family and friends on their various devices. He has used these past experiences to help guide him in tackling the various technical challenges that come with working with a large preexisting application.
Matt Douglas
Matt is the DevOps lead and is particularly interested in backend development and cloud computing. He has a BA in Political Science and German from UVic, as well as two years of experience working overseas as a teacher. Matt’s broad technical foundation and strong communication skills make him a versatile and reliable developer. Matt is excited by the rapid changes happening in software development and is looking forward to a career filled with fun challenges and continual learning.
